Enemies of Religion

from "Thoughts in a Dry Season" (1978), by Gerald Brenan (1894-1987):
"The greatest enemies of religion have always been the religious people themselves, more particularly the 'dévots', who got an egotistical satisfaction from displaying their beliefs and trying to dominate other people with them. Today they have lost their power, but the harm has been done. The Victorian bishops and clergymen are the real fathers of atheism in England."
