Concetta Centonze
promotrice della Riforma erasmiana della Chiesa Cattolica.

Papa Day (20.01.2008)

Enemies of Religion

from "Thoughts in a Dry Season" (1978), by Gerald Brenan (1894-1987):
"The greatest enemies of religion have always been the religious people themselves, more particularly the 'dévots', who got an egotistical satisfaction from displaying their beliefs and trying to dominate other people with them. We wish to reproduce it here for many reasons, not the least of which is the dramatic and coincidental way in which it illustrates Pope Marcellus II's sub-title to this blog: "Try to see what men are doing with their hands rather than their mouths".

This most religious work is a deeply symbolic icon. Christ and his twelve disciples are seated around the table of the Last Supper, which is seen from above, and only their hands are showing. There is a glass of wine, but no bread. The bread is the icon itself; the table, in the form of the sacred Host, held up vertically as the picture hangs on a wall, or in this case, on our computer screens (the verticality of Federico Barocci's 'Institution of the Eucharist' springs to mind). The recently unfolded pressed tablecloth, bears crease marks in the form of the cross on which Christ will die, here impressed upon the 'Host'. The colour is a uniform wine or blood brownish red, broken by the white of the cross, and light on the hands.

Jesus Christ is at the top of the picture. His hands project into the central space and are opened to his fellows and to his fate. The volume they suggest is in the form of an egg, the most natural symbol of life, enclosed by the alpha and omega of the open and covering hands. At the bottom of the canvas, opposite Christ, are the tightly closed hands of Judas Iscariot, in negation of life. On Jesus's right are the soft hands of Saint John, the Beloved Apostle, while perhaps Saint Peter is scratching the table in anguish.

But this is not a realistic canvas, except for the superb quality of the brushwork. The hands may be the hands of any of us although here they are all studies from the same person, the artist himself. We may each of us identify with a different person at this table. We would hope not to deny life with the closed hands of Judas, but rather to be open, in all its multitudinous vitality, to the non-discriminating and catholic 'agape' taught us by Jesus Christ himself.

Christ the bread and the wine of life; the Host and the Chalice; the gathering together of believers; the Eucharist; betrayal by one of his own. They are all here in this painting by Andrei Dubinin, whom we thank for allowing us to use it.

Evelyn Waugh, God & Diversity

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fzka9JRQjho/RmgdxAWcpyI/AAAAAAAAAA8/4irU490xyCo/s320/HolyPlaces.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5073337707977811746" /> We might not immediately associate the testy, old-fashioned, conservative, English, Roman-Catholic convert, Evelyn Waugh with a message of hope for today. However, he is always worth reading and may hold some surprises. One of these comes at the end of the first chapter of his slim volume The Holy Places (1952). It is the chapter dedicated to the life of the mother of Constantine the Great, St Helena, and her finding of the Cross in the Holy Land and it is entitled ‘Saint Helena Empress’.

At the end of his short commentary on this misty character from history, Waugh meditates on the meaning of her life for us. Whatever he may have meant more than half a century ago, for the modern reader Waugh’s words ring out and express the way in which God’s creation is wonderful in its variety, how diversity is part of His grand design.

“The Cross is very plain for us to-day; plainer perhaps than for many centuries. What we can learn from Helena is something about the workings of God; that He wants a different thing from each of us, laborious or easy, conspicuous or quite private, but something which only we can do and for which we were created.”

BUON PASTORE

due sorrisi per una domenica
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fzka9JRQjho/RllhAIcSTxI/AAAAAAAAAAs/4o2SnGJnXDI/s320/microphone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069189510476222226" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fzka9JRQjho/RllhbIcSTyI/AAAAAAAAAA0/QRZpe5glqks/s320/roncalli.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5069189974332690210" />

ON A CRUCIFIX

In 1873, partly under the influence of the Anglican priest and Cambridge moral theologian Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-1872), the English poet and polemicist Edward Carpenter published his first book of verse. From that book, we reproduce this interesting post-Risorgimento but pre-Vatican II poem, inspired in the eternal city.

ON A CRUCIFIX
In the Church of St John Lateran, Rome

STILL, still they crucify thee, O great Christ.
They took thee from thy cross on Calvary,
And nailed thee in a splendid place unpriced
Of malachite and gold and porphyry.
They counted all the wounds thy body bore,
They measured all the hours of misery,
On spear and reed and sponge they set great store:
Still, still they crucify thee, gentle Christ.

They used thy name, because thou wast so meek,
To be the watchword of all godless pride;
Because thou wast so gracious to the weak,
They held thy flaming cross up far and wide,
A curse and terror in the common street
To poor and ignorant and world-untried,
And then they came and crouched and kissed thy feet,
With folded hands and lips slavish and sleek.

Still, still they crucify thee, who didst say
Suffer the little ones to come to me,
Whose heart with love beguiled the beaten way,
And made all men behold thee joyfully;
For now they wave away the vulgar crowd,
No simple child of man my come nigh thee:
With obscure rites and incantations loud
They crucify thy love fresh every day.

Once, where the churches offer stones for bread,
And in their Holy Place call darkness light,
Thy sun-like truth-revealing presence shed
Shame on each false and Pharisaic rite;
Till, as thy lustre more intensely shone,
They took thee from thy chosen lowly site,
And set thee for their own especial sun,
And called thee by the name of Church's Head.

And now, when in an aisle loud trumpets bray,
And facing thee the priests go to and fro,
And, distanced off, the kneeling people pray
And breathe thy name in trembling accents low:
High o'er the incense and the altar cloud,
Afar, and folded in thine own great woe,
Alone, thy head in deep dejection bowed,
Great Christ, they crucify thee every day.

Thy face is turned aside from all that scene,
Thine eyes are weary of their age-long gaze,
Thy frame is worn, thy shrunken limbs grow lean,
Thou seem'st to tremble at the song of praise;
For here, and in thy name, the evil word,
The ban, the curse, and damning pious phrase,
Century after century were heard,
Christ, as if thou their Counsellor hadst been.

So long? These twice ten hundred years, O Christ?
Hath no one yet come near to lift thee down?
Hath no one yet thy holy spirit priced
Above the three nails and the thorny crown?
Thy seamless robe the Roman soldiers took,
But these have woven thee another gown
Of all thy bitter shame and sharp rebuke
Wherein to crucify thee still, great Christ.

Slowly the days run on, the time is long,
The kneeling generations come and go,
Thy word is to them as an empty gong,
They look upon thee but they do not know.
Thine arms, wide-spread for all the world's embrace,
Are empty evermore of friend or foe,
Still, still set stiff and rigid in their place,
And straightened back from love with rivets strong.

Ah, surely in the seeming endless years
Some momentary glance hath gladdened thee,
Some smile of recognition reached through tears
Hath shed light on thy later Calvary.
Yet is thy love more like a thing untold,
To stay and suffer still so patiently,
By suffering to overcome the cold
Heart of estrangement of thy loved compeers.

And now, the end, what is it? For each day
The magic ceremonious circle, drawn
Betwixt thee and the people, doth betray
Less room for love and more for serge and lawn;
The world grows weary seeking thee in vain,
And leaves thee to the priests, who self-withdrawn
In secret pride find popular disdain
And pitiful desertion and dismay.

The Papal pride has triumphed: it has set
Itself for thee. The world has turned away.
The Papal pride has fallen. Wilt thou yet
Remain to us in this later day?
Or will thy name, as something that is not,
Pass from the ears of men unlearned to pray,
Thy centuries of suffering forgot,
Thy love to men for evermore unmet?

Ah! greater is thy love than this, great Christ.
Thou givest, but thou askest not again;
And though our wayward worship be enticed
To other shrines, thy spirit shall remain,
Unknown, to breathe upon us purer life,
Refine us with the flame of earthly pain,
Until, our hearts with thine no more at strife,
We learn how not to crucify thee, Christ.

Cattolici contro 'FAMILY DAY'

Don Beppe Scapino, parroco a Ivrea.
................

The subject is paedophile priests. It lasts about 40 minutes and is a very intelligent and sensitive BBC production in English with Italian subtitles. Any comment would be superfluous.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3237027119714361315

26 May 2007
After much protest from the Vatican and from various career prelates, who claim it was unfair and untruthful, this powerful film has been removed from the internet. This is a pity, since it demonstrated how the Vatican moves to cover up scandal, for the 'greater good'. It seemed to us and to various priests that the video was not at all untruthful and only showed the tip of an iceberg. The BBC claims that by being on the web it infringed their copyright.

09 June 2007
The BBC film has now been shown on Italian TV and the best of the young Roman Catholics present on that occasion said that this kind of revelation of the truth can only do the Church good.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fzka9JRQjho/RkyAlYcSTwI/AAAAAAAAAAk/3x9Be1Pf3z8/s320/Cross.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065565060589571842" />

VERSION IN ENGLISH:

Today is 12th May and various Roman Catholic church and Italian political organisations have called this FAMILY DAY in Italy and are holding a large demonstration in Piazza San Giovanni. Various reasons are given for this and the most insidious is that it is to defend this essential part of Italian life. However, the real reason is clear from various posters stuck up at vast cost all over Rome. Two posters come straight to mind: one from a right-wing association which says it is 'Against the dictatorship of relativism. Free to believe in The Family, Life, The Truth', while another, advertising the participation of a party which was a member of the previous government, has as its main message CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS - NEVER!

Many commentators have pointed out that this FAMILY DAY is not a demonstration FOR, but AGAINST. We believe that its origin is in that exclusive way in which real life is interpreted, like Mussolini, when, on 27th October 1930 he shouted from the balcony in Piazza Venezia, Rome: "The struggle between the two worlds [Fascism and Democracy] can permit no compromises...It's either Us or Them!"

We have thought much about THE FAMILY and it seems to us to be a bad choice of words. It has come from the usual abstract way that some people interpret all the teeming real life that surrounds us. This 'FAMILY' is as abstract as that 'Volk' dear to Adolf Hitler, a man obsessed with controlling the lives of others: "ein Volk, ein Reich, Ein Führer." Those who preach against relativism do not seem to realise that they themselves are the greatest relativists, blinkered, able to see only their personal vision of life, and ready to deny the rights of others.

But life is greater than they are, because life is made up of lives. THE FAMILY is only a concept, nothing more; FAMILIES are real. And families are often the fruit of the kind of affections which escape the control of sometimes Pharisaic hierarchies.

One of those AFFECTION-BASED FAMILIES is that created by Jesus Christ immediately previous to his death on the Cross. In the Gospel of St John, who repeatedly reminds us that he was an eye-witness, we find: 'So Jesus, seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his home' (St John, 19:26/27).

This is an example of ONE family founded on affections. There are many other kinds of families ('In my Father's house there are many resting-places.' John, 14:2) which are always stronger than and escape the chains of order and control maniacs. They are often a reflection of that universal Love which was, for us who are Catholics, revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. But we shall postpone a discussion of Love for another occasion.

a thought for the week

from
http://www.sacredspace.ie/

Something to think and pray about this week
In one of the gospel parables, the rich man is mulling over his treasures, and plans to build even bigger barns to store all his crops. He relishes his security: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come. Jesus reflects: A man’s life is not made secure by what he owns. As we grow quiet in prayer, our hearts can be invaded in the same way by false securities. In the measure that my heart is in past treasures, I am fossilised and dead, for life is only in the present. So to each of these past treasures I am grateful yet I say goodbye, explaining that, grateful though I am that it came into my life, it must move out, or my heart will never learn to love the present.

Italian secret services & the prelate

This last week has seen tension in Italy regarding the Roman Catholic church and its new, openly political vocation. In particular, the head of the Italian Conference of Bishops, Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, who has used strong language against some future social legislation in Italy, has been threatened. Moreover, the fact that some person or persons sprayed graffiti on the door of the Archbishop's church in Genoa, has caused the Italian state to react. The criticism expressed by the graffiti-writer was 'Bagnasco Vergogna' ('Bagnasco, Shame on you'), which in the political language of any other free, western country would be considered mild, to say the least. But in Italy the official Vatican newspaper has compared criticism of the church to 'terrorism'.

The result is, as you will see, that the local secret services (DIGOS) have been called in. Is this the first case of the secret service of a country of the European Union (Italy) being used to protect the servants of a non-EU or 'extracomunitario' state (The Vatican) from criticism. Are the Italian secret services being used to prop up the Vatican thought controllers? We do not criticise the decision, we only ask the question.

http://www.repubblica.it/2007/04/sezioni/cronaca/bagnasco-sotto-scorta/bagnasco-sotto-scorta/bagnasco-sotto-scorta.html

Beauty & Ethics

Worth reflecting on ("I was reading some Bernard Haring on beauty and ethics yesterday and I thought you might appreciate the following passage"):

"Alienation from the beautiful among moralists and educators has made of biblical morality, with its gratitude, joy and wholeness, a fretful groaning under incomprehensive imperatives, laws and controls, a chilling encounter with duties, or a petty computation of merits for the other world. What role did the Church play in this? The lobbying was initiated and sustained by non-conformist women (esp. Quakers) in the US and the UK throughout the 18c, and eventually found in Wilberforce and Clarkson appropriate moral leaders able to bring about the appropriate legislation in the British Parliament. The Catholic Church played no part in this at all, and has never issued any major statement of teaching on slavery. France, a Catholic country with ideals of liberty equality and fraternity, abolished slavery on ly in 1848, the USA in 1864.
Thank heaven we have the prophetic witness of St Peter Claver in 17c Cartegena (not that anyone knows a thing about him in the Church because they are too busy sobbing over Padre Pio and the Medjugore 'visionaries'). And what was the role of Pope Nicholas V in the sanctioning of the slave trade in the late 15c? What is it saying now about slavery in its various transmuted forms?

In sexual matters, as in other medical issues generally, the Church is reluctant to study and understand modern developments, being basically caught up in a biologistic mind frame and an obsession with the amporphous concept of natural law. Consider the now conveniently forgotten attitude to vaccination when it first appeared on the scene.
The position is not far removed from the outright rejection of medical intervention espoused by by the Christian Scientists, or the Old Testament fear of blood evinced by the Jehovah Witnesses. Indeed, it is the strictures in the Mosaic Law of Numbers and Leviticus that still determine attitudes to many complex sexual issues and the basic horror that is still associated with all bodily fluids, especially the unmentionable semen. Here a basically Medieval attitude that it is the medium of new life in itself still governs underlying attitudes to masturbation and contraception.

see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Claver
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Pietro_Claver
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Claver

Oscar Wilde: the Indivisible Church

Oscar Wilde, 29th June 1900

"It is a curious, and therefore natural thing, but I cannot stand Christians because they are never Catholics, and I cannot stand Catholics because they are never Christians.
